Cesarean delivery (c-section): reasons, types and procedure

12-09-2023

What is a cesarean delivery?

A cesarean section or c-section is a surgical procedure used to deliver your baby through the abdomen rather than the vagina (normal delivery).

During a cesarean operation, your obstetrician will make a cut through your tummy and womb, to allow your baby to be born. This is the quickest way to deliver your baby if there are any complications.

Most cesareans are carried out with spinal or epidural anaesthesia to ensure you don't feel any pain. Throughout the procedure, you'll be awake and aware of what's happening around you.

However, in some cases, a general anaesthetic may be needed. Your doctor will take a call on the type of anaesthetic required depending on your and your baby's health.

A cesarean is a major abdominal operation and has some risks. It's usually only done if it's the safest option for you and your baby.
